The Red Digital Company has announced a new modular camera system that records both still and moving video images with the same device.
The system envisions a new era when a single journalist is shooting both still and video images for multiple media outlets. However, the Red system scales dramatically upward, with camera modules ranging from 3K to 28K for the highest level of 3-D motion picture imaging.
Red calls the system DSMC, for Digital Stills and Motion Camera. Depending on the shooting situation, the camera can be configured, using a wide range of modular accessories, to operate like a portable video, digital cinema, or DSLR camera.
The system uses the REDCODE RAW compression format to produce both still images and variable frame rate videos.
