The Drive Digital Media production team with President Matthew Barksdale (center) poses for a photo May 3 in Sonoma, CA, at the Infineon Raceway before that weekend’s Ferrari Challenge race.
Matthew Barksdale, president of Drive Digital Media, in Overland Park, KS, is a big fan of the Flip Video HD camcorder –so much so that he’s using several in the new Ferrari Challenge series his company is producing for distribution on Speed.
Primarily shot with JVC ProHD camcorders, the series is being covered in 16 half-hour racing programs. The Flip Video HD camcorders are used in special situations –for example, at the apex of a turn- where it’s too dangerous to locate a camera operator.
HD video from the Flip Video HD camcorders is edited into the show in post to provide an exciting element to the production that otherwise would have been nearly impossible to add.
In this week’s edition of Sound Off, Barksdale discusses the new series, how the tiny consumer video camcorders are used and how the ever-declining price of HD equipment makes high definition a reality for a show like this, with a rather small, niche audience.
