FCC releases Report and Order on children’s programming in a DTV world

The FCC made public its Report and Order regarding the obligation of television broadcasters to carry educational and informational programming for children and to protect them from excessive commercial messaging.

As reported in the Sept. 21 edition of RFU (see “FCC addresses children’s programming obligations of digital television broadcasters”, the FCC spelled out rules for both analog and digital TV broadcasters.

However, the Report and Order paid special attention to DTV stations, addressing such issues as the impact of multicasting digital channels in fulfilling children’s programming obligations.

The Report and Order, which was adopted Sept. 9, was released to the public Nov. 23. Comments from interested parties are due March 1 and reply comments have an April 1 deadline.
