NBC kicks off newest mobile TV channel with live U.S. Open coverage

NBC Universal has launched NBC Sports Mobile, its latest mobile television service on MobiTV, making its debut with a live feed from last month’s 2007 U.S. Open Golf Tournament.

Subscribers to MobiTV, which delivers live television to mobile phones, were treated to the tournament’s opening tee-off with Tiger Woods, along with coverage of other live shots throughout the event. A highlight show — the “Lexus U.S. Open Wrap-up” — and on-demand videos from the event were also part of the new service. NBC simulcast much of the content on NBCSports.com.

The new channel provides regular highlights of NBC Sports and NBCSports.com programming, including news, scores and videos. Current coverage includes the Wimbledon Tennis Championships, with plans to cover NFL games later this year.

This is not NBC’s first foray into mobile programming. Earlier this year, the company launched NBC2GO on Verizon Wireless’ VCast mobile TV service, which offers programming from a variety of NBC Universal holdings on mobile devices. It also offers “Hollywood Movie Minutes on Mobile,” a service that lets people watch streaming video clips of movies from the Universal Studios film archive on their mobile phones.
