QUALCOMM had a lot to show at the Mobile World Conference this year. FLO-EV, the next evolution of the FLO air interface for new deployments of mobile TV and other advanced broadcast mobile media services is aimed at international markets. FLO-EV builds on FLO technology to enable mobile content and services with more channel capacity and higher performance, while lowering wireless deployment costs for delivering multimedia content to mobile devices.
Among FLO-EV’s technical enhancements to the original FLO Rev. A air interface (TIA-1099) is a 3dB-5dB improvement in performance with the same spectrum efficiency. This link margin can translate into a 30 to 50 percent reduction in capital and operating costs to deploy a FLO-EV network, without hurting channel-change times or viewer experience or adding power consumption on the mobile device. FLO-EV is suitable for new mobile TV network launches as well as for upgrades to existing FLO Rev. A networks, where it can increase channel capacity by 50 percent or more using existing transmit sites with no increase in radiated power.
QUALCOMM also previewed forthcoming FLO-enabled PCTV "smartbook" applications that unite live TV viewing with real-time Web content, social networking and personalized digital media stored on the device for later access. Running on Snapdragon-enabled devices, QUALCOMM’s new FLO applications seamlessly combine live mobile TV programming with personalized, real-time streaming data and access to popular social networking sites, video clips and e-magazines.
QUALCOMM’s new FLO-enabled PCTV "smartbook" unites live TV viewing with all the things you need your laptop for while you're watching TV: surfing Web content, social networking and watching the first version of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." All it requires is a Snapdragon-enabled device.
