In mid-November, COMARK Communications, a venerable name in the television transmission business, re-emerged when F4 Holdings sold Thomson Broadcast to management led by Richard Fiore Jr., serving as CEO and president.

The transaction, announced Nov. 19 and completed on the 40th anniversary of COMARK’s founding, reestablishes a U.S. manufacturer of transmitters with a storied history that was twice honored with Technical Emmys.

Fiore, son of company founder Richard Fiore Sr., says it’s important to put the challenges of repacking TV spectrum into perspective. While a significant task, the effort won’t approach the challenges faced transitioning to digital transmission the first time around.

In this podcast interview, Fiore talks about the reverse auction and spectrum repack, the future of mobile DTV and how it is incumbent upon broadcasters to seize the opportunity afforded by the repack to position themselves technologically to benefit from new digital transmission efficiencies.
