SAVVIS, a global provider of managed and outsourced IT services, announced at NAB that it has been contracted by the CBS Television Network to deploy a digital media archiving and retrieval system supporting the legacy CBS television content archives and its library of new assets.
The project includes implementing a digital archive, retrieval and distribution system for the CBS television entertainment library that will allow CBS to search, manage, store and repurpose assets.
SAVVIS is overseeing the solution design and provides the application systems and global private network for asset distribution and fulfillment on a global scale.
Harris Invenio Systems is providing control of ingest systems, archival middleware and end-user applications that enable a desktop workflow for indexing, archival management and distribution of content. Front Porch Digital's DIVArchive will control all archive management for the CBS TV City installation in Los Angeles.
DIVA is a software middleware that enables interoperability between large digital media storage devices, video servers, editing systems and digital media workflow applications, including its integration with the Sun StorageTek SL 8500.
The objective of the system, SAVVIS said, is to ensure that CBS assets are preserved and leveraged while improving operational efficiency. CBS also needs to plan for future growth requirements that are emerging as a result of digital media opportunities.
Currently, the CBS entertainment television archive includes approximately 250,000 reels of content and this is expected to grow significantly over the next five years.
