WRGB-DT and WCWN-DT, the CBS and CW network affiliates the Capital Region of upstate New York, have implemented a shared storage digital news production system from Harris to improve productivity and reduce operational expenses. The NewsForce solution was chosen because it interfaces seamlessly with the stations’ existing NEXIO on-air storage area network, which is made up of five NEXIO transmission servers.

Based at the same Schenectady, NY, facility, the sister stations have selected a NewsForce platform that includes five Velocity ESX HD/SD editing systems and the new NEXIO Browse system to enable desktop browsing and editing of low-resolution proxy clips throughout the news department.  The WRGB/WCWN browse network incorporates a NEXIO Browse Server storage array, 12 Velocity PRX low-res proxy editors and the NEXIO InstantOnline III conforming engine, so that journalists and editors can easily conform their low-resolution edits to high resolution.

The entire newsroom workflow is supported by a 7.8TB SAN (storage area network) comprising two NEXIO AMP HD/SD servers equipped with two NEXIO PRX transcoder servers for on-the-fly format conversion to low resolution. NEXIO Ingest Control Manager is used to acquire real-time footage and add metadata to the video.

The platform has also been integrated with an existing Avid iNEWS newsroom computer system and Ross Video OverDrive newsroom automation system.
