Fiber Optic Course

The higher bandwidths required by high-definition video and data signals often require the use of a fiber optic (FO) cable interconnection. However, for many engineers, using fiber in video applications is both new and mysterious. This course provides the information needed to begin using fiber and better understand the benefits it offers.

This introductory course begins with a solid foundation in the basics of fiber-optic technology. The lesson introduces important applicable terms and standards, discusses types of FO cable and their use in video applications. Other areas covered include stepped and graded FO cables, modulation methods, optical budgets and standards.

Any technician or engineer needing to better understand the application of fiber to video and data will benefit from this course.

This course is designed to provide an introduction and review of fiber-optic transmission systems and technology, including:

  • Fiber-optic transmitters and receivers
  • Modulation methods
  • Fiber-optic cable construction and classification
  • Terminations and connectors

  • Understanding TDM and WDM transmission systems
  • Optical routing switchers
