IPTV design considerations

IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) represents the next-generation digital television service. Relying on an IP infrastructure built on a closed network, IPTV subscribers are provided a broad array of digital services, including hundreds of video, high-definition and music channels; VOD; interactivity, high-speed Internet; and telephone service — all in a spectrum-efficient manner.

However, building, operating and maintaining IPTV networks requires new skills. This course provides engineers, technicians and system operators with a solid foundation on the technology.

This course is divided into five general operational areas: ingest, transcode and storage, followed by distribution and QoS issues. Each task area is described in detail along with the applicable underlying systems and technology.

This course is filled with system diagrams, drawings and illustrations to enhance the educational experience. For those wanting to begin a career in the IPTV space, or just needing a refresher tutorial, this course is the perfect solution. In this course, you will learn about:

  • Building an IPTV headend
  • Ingest, transcoding and storage
  • Types of compression systems
  • Multiplexing data
  • Data and control networks
  • Transport and delivery systems and maintaining high QoS
  • Multicast/unicast programs and transactions

  • Confidence monitoring and maintenance

This course is presented by Augusto Villaseñor, an experienced IPTV system design engineer with Globecomm. He has recently completed several IPTV and file-based playout systems in the U.S. and is now building an Asia-based media processing center for IPTV, DVB-H and DTH operations.
